OSHA Standard 1980.19 for Overhead & Gantry Crane Regulations requires that all active cranes must be inspected once per year at a minimum. Depending on the crane’s usage, additional inspections are required.
Crane inspections can be classified as frequent or periodic inspections based on the intervals between inspections. Frequent inspections should be conducted daily or monthly, while periodic inspections can occur bimonthly, quarterly, or yearly. Cranes that have not been used for more than a month, but less than six months require a frequent inspection before use. Cranes that have not been used for more than six months require both periodic and frequent inspections before use.
Daily frequent inspections should check for the following:
Monthly frequent inspections should check for the following:
PERIODIC INSPECTIONS Periodic inspections are needed in one to twelve-month intervals, based on the service class of the crane. Periodic inspections require a complete inspection of the crane by a qualified inspector.
Frequency of Periodic Inspections
Periodic Inspections should check for the following:
After completion of periodic inspections, the qualified inspector should document and note any deficiencies that may cause a safety hazard and may need to be addressed. The inspector must then decide whether the crane should be removed from service while it’s been repaired. If there is any doubt, the crane should be removed from service. Once the inspector has completed the full inspection, they must date and sign the inspection record. The inspection records should be kept on file and readily available should the need arise.
