Top OSHA Violations of 2018

Posted by Melissa Hall in #YHSafetyTips, Jan 02, 2019

Each year, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, commonly referred to as OSHA, ranks the top 10 most frequently cited safety violations for the previous year. The list, published in “Health and Safety” the official magazine of the National Security Council, notes that Fall Protection – General Requirements was the source of the most violations for the seventh consecutive year. The remainder of the top five violations also remain unchanged from the previous year.

The list is published annually by OSHA with the intent of alerting about the most commonly cited standards so employers can take steps to find and fix hazards addressed with these standards before OSHA shows up on the job site. History has shown that many preventable injuries and illnesses occur in the workplace and could be avoided if employers were more familiar with OSHA’s standards. The number of citations in OSHA’s report covers only citations issued by OSHA, and do not include violations found by other state enforcement agencies.

OSHA’s full list of the top 10 most cited violations:

  1. Fall Protection – General Requirements (1926.501): 7,270 violations
  2. Hazard Communication (1910.1200): 4,552 violations
  3. Scaffolding (1926.451): 3,336 violations
  4. Respiratory Protection (1910.134): 3,118 violations
  5. Lockout/Tagout (1910.147): 2,944 violations

  9. Machine Guarding (1910.212): 1,972 violations
  10. Eye and Face Protection (1926.102): 1,536 violations
